Olga Helen Slamka dies at 91

Olga Helen Slamka, of Porter, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004 in Valparaiso. She was 91.

She was born Nov. 25, 1912 in South Chicago, Ill. the daughter of John and Magdaline (Zvonkovic) Nazay, both of whom preceded her in death.

On July 20, 1935 in South Chicago, she married Steven J. Slamka, who preceded her in death in 1978.

She is survived by a son, Joseph (Ruthanne) Slamka of Chesterton; a sister, Margaret McCoy of Merrillville and three nieces, Chrissy (David) Barron of Merrillville, Debbie (John) Powelson of Mo. and Kim (David) Thornberry of Tenn.

She was also preceded in death by a step-father, Michael Putnikovich.

From South Chicago, Olga moved to Michigan City where she graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1932. She worked for many years as a seamstress at Jaymar Ruby Co. making Osh Kosh Kids Clothing, and at Doctor’s Hospital, Michigan City as a nurse’s assistant.

She moved to Porter in 1940 and worked as a seamstress at Arkay Garment Factory, Chesterton. She worked at Faircraft Manufacturing in Porter.

A member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Chesterton, she enjoyed singing for many years in the Traditional and Funeral Choirs. She was also a member of the Church’s Senior Club, Rosary Society and Willing Workers of the Church. A member of Duneland Garden Club and Royal Neighbors of America, she will also miss her beloved cat, Maxie.

A Mass of Christian Burial, Rev. James Meade officiating, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd. Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery, Chesterton.

The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Church. Rosary will be recited at 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be made to St. Patrick Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St. Chesterton.
