The mother of a Porter resident, Nellie Marie Vehnekamp Wagner of Remington, Ind. died Friday, June 27, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette, In. She was 83.

She was born July 4, 1919 in Monticello the daughter of William and Cecelia (Kendall) Vehnekamp, who preceded her in death.

On November 24, 1938 in Remington, she married Raymond F. Wagner, who preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 1992.

She is survived by three sons, Raymond A. (Susan) Wagner of Porter, Ralph A. (Ellen) Wagner of Hilton Head Island, S.C. and Ronald C. (Jane) Wagner of Cary, Ill.; two daughters, Judith (John) O’Neil of Monticello and Linda “Lynn” (Lyle) Lemme of Lafayette; a sister, L. Mae Thomas of Monticello; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Adelene Vehnekamp and five brothers, Bill, Vehnekamp, Walter Vehnekamp, John Vehnekamp, Ralph Vehnekamp and Bernard Vehnekamp.

She was a 1937 graduate of Monticello High School. She was bookkeeper for her husband’s water treatment lab. She had previously been the owner of Tots and Teens Toggery of Remington and co-owner of Nu-Ray Restaurant of Lafayette. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at Sacred Heart, The Catholic Daughters of America, V.F.W. and American Legion of Monticello. She was a Lady Knight in Marian Assembly in Rensselaer. She was previously very involved in the American Heart Association.

A Funeral Mass, Rev. Thomas Fox and Rev. Leonard Kostka, co-celebrants, is scheduled at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 3 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Remington. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Remington.

Visitation is scheduled from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday with a Rosary Service at 8 p.m. and a sharing of Memories following at the Stitz Funeral Home, Remington.
