Marvin V. Swisher dies at 80

Marvin V. Swisher of Chesterton, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003 at VNA Hospice Center, Valparaiso. He was 80.

He was born Jan. 3, 1923 in Merrill, Iowa, the son of Walter and Goldie J. (Cox) Swisher, who preceded him in death.

On Aug. 8, 1948 in Chesterton, he married Betty Joan Swisher, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by a son, Randy Marvin Swisher of Chesterton; 2 daughters, Linda Joan (William) Morgan of Bolingbrook, Ill. and Bonnie K. (Gary “Bud”) Work of Jackson Twp.; a sister, Lois G. Hewitt of Chesterton and a sister-in-law, Ruth Swisher of Tampa, Fla.; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, John and Walter Swisher.

He was an area resident since 1946 and was a retired steelworker for Inland Steel. He was former Justice of the Peace in Liberty Twp., member of the Liberty Fire Department, Liberty P.T.A. and Liberty Rod and Gun Club. He was a member of the Hammond (Garfield) Masonic Lodge, 32nd Degree Mason and held a 55 year pin. He was a former President of the Porter County Liquor Board and played semi-professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinal’s Farm System.

Interment of ashes will occur at a later date. Cremation will be at Heritage Crematory, Portage, after visitation.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.

Memorials may be made to VNA Hospice of Porter County.
