Chesterton resident Marvin D. “Dutch” Schmitt died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003
in the emergency department at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso. He
was 78.
Born on Jan. 22, 1925 in Durand, Ill., he was the son of Erwin W. and Mary
Elizabeth (Wright) Schmitt, both of whom preceded him in death.
On August 30, 1947 in Gary, he married Emma Moser, who survives in
Chesterton.
Also surviving are daughter Cheryl Huseman (husband Paul) of Chesterton; and
grandchildren Jacob, Joel and Jessica Huseman, all of Chesterton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Maurice
Owens and Donald Schmitt.
A Chesterton resident since 1992, coming here from Hobart, he was a retired
supervisor/foreman. He worked for 46 years at the Dixie Dairy Garage in
Gary. He served in the U.S. Army 70th Tank Battalion in World War II and was
a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was also a member of the
Teamsters Local 142 in Gary, the American Legion Post 170 in Chesterton, the
V.F.W. Russell Springs, Kent. post, and a gold member of the Gary Sportman
Club. He will be sadly missed by his loving family and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. at
St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Road, with the Rev. James Meade
officiating. Burial will be in Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Edmonds & Evans
Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. A wake service will be at 7:30 p.m.
Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may made in the form of masses to St.
Patrick Catholic Church.
