Margaret Hanaway dies at 82

Margaret Eleanor Hanaway, 82, formerly of Chesterton, died Aug. 29, 2003 of complications of Parkinson’s disease. She died in Hermitage, Mo. with Von Hanaway, her husband of 54 years, at her side.

She was born June 23, 1921 in Chicago, the daughter of Leonard and Matilda Swanson Anderson.

On May 28, 1949 in Valparaiso, she married Von Hanaway, who survives.

She is also survived by 4 sons, Gene Hanaway of North Judson, Terry Hanaway of Hebron, Leonard Smith (recently of Porter) of Santa Fe, Tenn. and Patrick Hanaway of San Diego, Calif.; 5 daughters, Vicki Keck of Richland, Mich., Linda Bailey of Temecula, Calif., Susan Hensley of Warrensburg, Mo., Karla Skomal of Chesterton and Lisa Hanaway of Escondido, Calif.; 19 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends, all of whom deeply miss her.

She grew up in Chesterton and went to college at Valparaiso University. She taught high school in Indiana for 17 years before moving to Escondido. She taught high school in the Escondido School Systems for 25 years where she was director of Simm’s School, a program for pregnant minors. She retired in the early 1980’s and moved to Hermitage, Mo. in 1996. She was proud of her Swedish heritage, loved spending time with family, reading and at her Lake Michigan cottage.

A funeral mass was held for her at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Hermitage, Mo. Tuesday, Sept. 2.
