Glen Thornton dies at 74

Glen W. Thornton, of Portage, died Saturday, September 13, 2003 at Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing Home, Portage. He was 74.

He was born August 17, 1929 in Gary the son of John W. and Beulah G. (Woodruff) Thornton, who preceded him in death.

On September 11, 1954 in Gary, he married Lillian Kapler, who survives in Portage.

He is also survived by a son, Glen E. (Cindy Kelly and her daughter Elizabeth) Thornton of Portage; 2 daughters Nancy L. (Bill) Gasser of Chesterton and Judi L. (Robert) Green of Parker, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Harry Groebner of Gary; a sister, D’Maris (John) Mueller of Castlerock, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Kaplar of Merrillville; 3 grandchildren, Erin, Glen W. II (Woody) and Alyssa; numerous nieces, nephews, many close friends and co-workers.

He was also preceded in death by a sister Patricia Groebner.

He was a retired Construction Manager for Ameritech. He retired in 1991 after 36 years of service. He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a 1947 graduate of Wirt High School and an avid gardener.

A funeral service, Chaplain Lisa Casimer officiating, is scheduled at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage. Cremation will follow service at Heritage Crematory, Portage.

Visitation is scheduled Wednesday, from 2 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. at Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel.
