Frank T. “Bud” Mathews, the father of a Jackson Township resident, died
Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Community Hospital in St. John. A resident of St.
John, he was 84.
He was born on Sept. 1, 1919, in Hammond, the son of Frank M. and Anne
(White) Mathews, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, June Mills Mathews of St. John; children Teresa
(husband Rick) Walsworth of Jackson Township, Sheila (husband Tom) Brady of
Virginia Beach, Va., Peggy (husband Darryl) Holst of Chicago, Maureen
(husband Dale) Roberts of Morton, Ill., Tom (wife Ces) Mathews of Downers
Grove, Ill., Jack (wife Pat) Mathews of Portland, Ore., Brenda (husband
Jeff) Parry of Michigan City, Carl (wife Janice) Mathews of St. Joseph,
Mich., Alan (wife Judy) Mathews of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Lisa Irene Mathews
of Lakewood, Ohio, and Valerie (husband Bill) Warren of Hobart; a stepson,
Butch Mills; brothers and sisters Judy (husband Bill) Lannin of Hessville,
Mary Lou (husband Vern) Hildebrandt and Jim (wife Mary Neill) Mathews, both
of Gary, Teddy (wife Jennie) Mathews of Rensselaer, and Richard (wife Betsy)
Mathews of Dyer; 32 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters Sue Lewis and Robert,
David, Denis, and Martha Jean Mathews.
Mathews served with the U.S. Army in Sicily, Italy, North Africa, and the
Middle East during World War II, received his B.S. in chemical engineering
from Purdue University, and worked as a project manager for Sinclair
Refining Company (ARCO) until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the
St. Joseph Church in Dyer, where he served as an usher, and served as
president of ARCO Illiana Retirees Association.
Funeral services are scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Monday at Elmwood Chapel in St.
John, with a mass at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church in Dyer, the Rev.
Mark Paulina officiating. He will be interred at Calumet Park Cemetery in
Merrillville.
Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elmwood Chapel, 11300 W.
97th Lane in St. John, one half block west of U.S. 41 Wicker Ave. at 97th
Street.
