The original swim coach of the Golden Gators, Chesterton High School girls
swim team and local community leader, Dolores C. Read, of Chesterton, died
Monday, September 1, 2003 at her residence. She was 75.
Dolores was a retired teacher from the Indianapolis School Systems. She was
a member of First United Methodist Church. She coached the CHS girls’ swim
team at Valparaiso, before Chesterton High School had a pool. She was a
former president of the Chesterton Woman’s Club and leader of an Indiana
State award winning project of the Chesterton Woman’s Club.
She was a member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority and Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.
She was on the Board of Directors of the Duneland YMCA and was a member of
the United Methodist Women’s Club. She was a volunteer for the Northern
Amateur golf tournament at Sand Creek Country Club and former volunteer of
United Way. She also was a former Den Mother for Boy Scouts of America.
She was born, March 20, 1928 in Hammond, Ind., the daughter of Harry and Mae
(Lowery) Cawley, who preceded her in death.
On June 25, 1951 in Chesterton, she married Dr. John E. Read, who survives
in Chesterton.
She is also survived by a son, William (Mary) Read of Milwaukee, Wis.; 3
daughters, Lisa (Paul) Schiro of Houston, Texas, Mary Beth (Alvin II) Slont
of Chesterton and Carol (Bill) Ameling of Shorewood, Minn.; a brother,
William (Rosalie) Cawley of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, Morgan
Read, John A., Mary Beth, Stewart and Emily Rose Miglicco, Erin, Jessica and
Alvin III Slont and Read, Dane and Rachael Ameling.
A funeral service, Rev. Terry Rhine officiating, is scheduled at 10 a.m.
Friday, Sept. 5 at First United Methodist Church, 434 S. 2nd St.,
Chesterton. Entombment will be at Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Edmonds
& Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
