Dean J. Schmelter dies at 45

Dean J. Schmelter, of Valparaiso, formerly of Hobart, died Friday, September 12, 2003. He was 45.

He was born January 7, 1958 in Gary, the son of the late Paul R. Schmelter, who preceded him in death in 1988 and Doretta Schmelter, who survives in Hobart.

He also is survived by friend, Bill Tull of Valparaiso; a sister, Marcia (Eric) Stubbeman of Indianapolis; three brothers, Tom (Chris) Schmelter of Charlotte, N.C., Bill (Dana) Schmelter of Crown Point and Paul (Shelly) Schmelter of Hobart and 8 nieces and nephews.

He was an Indiana State Trooper serving at the Port of Indiana and was also employed at Porter Starke Services until poor health prevented him from working.

A time for reflection will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15 at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart.

Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Monday at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
