Theodore Ribar dies at 80

Theodore “Ted” G. Ribar, of Burns Harbor, died Sunday, September 14, 2003 at V.N.A. Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso. He was 80.

He was born September 6, 1923 in Gary, the son of George and Julia (Dobos) Ribar, who preceded him in death.

In 1963, he married Betty Jo Robertson, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by two sons, Michael (Sandra) Ribar of Burns Harbor and George (Debbie) Ribar of Wheeler; two brothers, Myron Ribar and Jerry (Nancy) Ribar; a sister, Mitzi Pogo of Hobart; a grandchild, Ted Ribar of Wheeler; a great-grandchild, McKenzie Ribar of Wheeler and dear friend, Lois Polito of Porter.

He was an area resident since 1970. He graduated from Froebel High School Class of 1941. He was a retired Navy Postal Chief. He served in WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He also retired from Midwest Steel. He was a member of Chesterton Moose Lodge #1623, Chesterton American Legion Post #170, Porter V.F.W. Post 2511, Fleet Reserve Assn. Naval Institute, Armed Guard Assn., USS Salisbury Sound Assn., Tin Can Sailors Assn., Destroyer Escort Assn. He served overseas at London, England, French Morocco and Guantanamo, Cuba. He was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church.

A funeral service, Fr. Michael Evanick officiating, is scheduled at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Chesterton.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17 with joint American Legion & V.F.W. Service at 7 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway.

Interment will be at Chesterton Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
