A 17-year-old boy listed as a missing person by the Valparaiso Police Department was taken into custody on Friday after he tried to start a fire on a South Shore train, the NICTD Transit Police said.

According to police, at 9:50 a.m. passengers on board South Shore train No. 14 alerted the conductor to a teen who appeared to be trying to set a train seat on fire with a cigarette lighter.

Officers responded to the train, which had stopped at the East Chicago station, and took the boy into custody. “During the course of the investigation it was discovered that the youth was a ‘missing person’ wanted by the Valparaiso Police Department,” Transit Police said.

The boy also exhibited signs of impairment and was transported to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, where he was put under observation, Transit Police said.

Charges will be referred to the Lake County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review of possible delinquency charges against the boy.
