CHICAGO (AP) -
Authorities in Chicago say two men rescued from a frigid Lake Michigan by
emergency crews have died at a nearby hospital.
Chicago Fire
Department officials say the men were swimming off a South Side beach
Tuesday when they apparently became disabled by the cold water. A third man
tried to rescue the men, but returned to shore after he began experiencing
trouble.
Deputy Fire Chief
Mike Fox say divers dropped by helicopters into the water quickly located
the men and brought them to shore. Fox says the men were taken in critical
condition to Mercy Hospital, where they later died.
Fox later said Lake
Michigan’s current condition, with temperatures in the low 50s, is not
friendly to swimmers.
He said the body
will shut down quickly at those temperatures.
