SAULT STE. MARIE,
Mich. (AP) - The Soo Locks have reopened for the 2016 cargo shipping season
on the upper Great Lakes.
The Great Lakes
Seaway Partnership says that the navigational lock complex at Sault Ste.
Marie opened Friday morning after closing in January for part of the winter.
The U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers operates Soo Locks on the St. Marys River. They lift and lower
vessels moving between Lakes Huron and Superior.
While the locks
were closed, winter maintenance took place.
Projects included
the installation of a hydraulic system for the Poe Lock; anchorage repairs
and other work on the Poe Lock; and work on the MacArthur Lock’s electrical
modernization.
