Rally Friday at Gary Airport to defend DACA

Back To Front Page

Members of Northwest Indiana Resistance, a community based coalition, will hold a rally and protest on Friday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Gary/Chicago International Airport. The group opposes the deportations that have occurred for over a decade at the airport which have resulted in over 20,000 undocumented workers being deported from Brownsville, Texas to Mexico.

According to Dr. Ruth Needleman, families are being torn apart. “Workers have lost their jobs and their homes while children are being left behind, often without due process. We stand together to defend DACA, to stop the deportation of our veterans as well as our neighbors.”

Speakers will include Indiana State Sen. Eddie Melton (D), families affected including DACA students, along with representatives from SEIU, UE, Chicago Jobs with Justice, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the Interfaith Federation, and various faith leaders.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1 is sponsoring a bus which will leave from Workers United, 333 South Ashland, in Chicago, at 9 a.m. Friday morning. Organizers ask that supporters come to the airport by 9:45 a.m.
