CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — Lake County remains the only county in Indiana
without a local income tax.
The Lake County Council had been expected to override county commissioners’
veto of the proposed 1 percent income tax on Friday, but the issue died when
no one on the council moved for a vote.
A crowd at the council meeting then broke into applause.
The council apparently had the votes needed to override the Dec. 19 veto
until Councilman Ted Bilski changed his mind. He told The Times of Munster
that he couldn’t support an income tax because some communities would receive
less property tax relief than they paid in income tax.
Council Attorney Ray Szarmach said the issue could be revived in 2008.
Council members have described the income tax as a mandate thrust upon
Indiana’s second-most populous county by state officials, who they say have
threatened to freeze Lake County’s property tax levies at 2007 levels.
