Service on the South Shore commuter line was suspended for most of the day on Saturday following the derailment of a passenger train at the Carroll Ave. Station in Michigan City.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) first reported the derailment at 5:26 a.m. via its text-alert service. Although NICTD initially said that a freight train had derailed, it corrected that statement later in an update.

At 8:37 a.m. Saturday NICTD announced that all train service had been indefinitely suspended, possibly for the remainder of the day. At 6:08 p.m. it announced that service had resumed, with westbound train No. 508 running 35 to 45 minutes late from Carroll Ave.

No one was injured in the derailment, which the AP reported had occurred while an empty passenger train was being moved into position. Some track and overhead wire were also damaged in the incident, the AP said.
