Contract awarded to demolish vacant Gary hotel

GARY, Ind. (AP) The city of Gary has awarded a $1.8 million contract to a Michigan company to demolish a 14-story vacant hotel near City Hall that has long been an eyesore.

The City's Redevelopment Commission awarded the contract Wednesday to Homrich Inc. of Carlton, Mich. The company was the second lowest of seven bidders.

Commission president Forest Hayes tells Post-Tribune of Merrillville the demolition will be done with excavators tearing down the hotel one section at a time and will go down 6 feet below the surface. The demolition is being financed with funding from the Community Development Department, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority.

The building was once was a symbol of a hoped-for downtown revival.
