WPL closed until April 10 in COVID19 precaution

The Westchester Township Public Library is closed today, Tuesday, March 17, through April 10 as a precaution to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19, according to a release sent out yesterday.

The text of that release in full:

“In the interest of the health and safety of our community during the COVID-19 outbreak, all Westchester Public Library locations will be closed starting Tuesday, March 17 through Friday, April 10. This will include the cancellation of all library programs and meetings scheduled inside the Library buildings during this time.

“The Library material return drop boxes at the Thomas and Hageman Branches will not be available to use. Please do not return your items to the Library during this time. All due dates will be extended while we are closed, so patrons won’t accrue late fees.

“We encourage patrons to take advantage of our virtual library resources at wpl.lib.in.us/virtual-library/ for eBooks, eMovies, eMagazines, eMusic, eLearning resources, and more.

“Find the latest Library updates on the WPL Facebook or Twitter page, or website at wpl.lib.in.us”

Library Director Lisa Stamm told the Chesterton Tribune most of the WPL staff will not be working during the closure as a measure to limit nonessential travel and interactions, but full- and part-time staff will still be paid for their regularly scheduled shifts. Some essential staff may periodically go into work or telecommute, she said.

The closure of WPL follows the closure yesterday of the Porter and Lake County library systems as well as the Hammond, Crown Point, and Michigan City libraries.

The Porter County Library system, where WPL cardholders benefit from a reciprocal borrowing agreement, is offering a curbside pickup service at all branches Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Patrons may check out up to 20 books, DVDs, audiobooks, CDs, wifi hotspots, video game systems, or puzzles by placing a request online or on the PCL app, waiting 24 hours for their requests to be filled, then parking in a designated “Library Express” parking spot and calling the pickup phone number posted nearby. Due dates and return procedures for PCL materials remain the same.
