INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Officials say no Haitian orphans are scheduled to come
to Indiana, despite reports that dozens of orphans could be on their way to
the state.
Grace Community Church in Noblesville and the Indianapolis office of Safe
Families for Children posted messages on their Web sites Wednesday seeking
homes for a group of Haitian orphans said to be coming to Indiana following
last week’s devastating earthquake.
Gov. Mitch Daniels’ spokeswoman Jane Jankowski says Daniels asked the state
Department of Child Services to look into what might be done to relocate
Haitian orphans, but any talk of orphans coming to Indiana now is
“premature.” She says Indiana would have to get approval from the U.S. and
Haitian governments.
Indianapolis Safe Families Director Krista Davis says “there is no imminent
receipt of Haitian orphans in Indiana.”
