MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) - A southwestern Indiana woman has been arrested
after state police say she acted as an unlicensed midwife for an infant who
died the day after she was born.
Indiana State Police arrested 64-year-old Alice Gates on Friday at her home
near Evansville. She faces preliminary charges of practicing nurse-midwifery
without a license. She was released on bond from Posey County Jail.
A man who answered the phone at Gates’ home said she had no comment.
Police say Gates provided prenatal care to a 21-year-old Mount Vernon woman
and was present during the child’s birth Dec. 20. The mother never had an
ultrasound or blood tests. Police said Gates told parents that the baby’s
breathing problems weren’t severe, but the following day she stopped
breathing and died.
