INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles is continuing its
battle over specialty auto license plates for a group that counsels gay and
The BMV has asked an administrative law judge to review her order allowing
the Indiana Youth Group to continue selling specialty license plates.
The agency suspended sale of the group’s plates last year at the request of
Republican state senators. Lawmakers charged the group was violating a
contract provision barring the auctioning of low-number plates.
An administrative judge ruled in May that the BMV erred in immediately
suspending the plate program last year without giving the group 30 days’
BMV Commissioner Scott Waddell directed the administrative judge to assess
the difference between “selling” and “auctioning” low-number license plates.
