A garbage truck
caused a back-up Thursday morning after getting tangled in the guardrails on
Interstate 65 in Newton County, the Indiana State Police said.
According to
police, at 5:35 a.m. Theodore R. Johnson, of University Park, Ill. was
transporting garbage from Chicago to a landfill in Monticello near the 234
mile marker south of the Kankakee River when, for unknown reasons, he ran
off the roadway and struck the outside guardrail. He struck the guardrail a
second time causing the semi’s right tractor tires to become lodged under
the guardrail, police said.
Police said this
area is also a construction zone with median work being done. Johnson was
not injured and there was no load loss at the scene. The 2005 Mack semi
Johnson was driving is owned by Illinois Bulk Carriers, police said.
Trooper William
Carlson was dispatched to the scene. Assisting at the scene ISP Sergeant
Dwayne Dillahunty, Newton County Sheriff Department and Village Motors.
The right lane was
closed for approximately 1.5 hours for removal of the semi, causing traffic
to back up for several miles.
