INDIANAPOLIS
(AP) — Indiana manufacturers and consumer groups have won concessions on a
bill that would make it easier for power companies to raise their rates.
Consumer
groups and companies such as Eli Lilly and Co. and Honda say the bill
sponsored by Republican Sen. Brandt Hershman of Buck Creek would drive up
energy bills and could push manufacturers out of the state.
Indiana's
utilities say the legislation would simply accelerate rate increases and
wouldn't make those increases larger.
The
Indianapolis Star reports the bill passed the House Utilities & Energy
Committee after amending the measure to include caps on the amount of rate
increases utilities could seek for upgrades and reduce temporary rate
hikes utilities could implement if regulators don't decide on a proposed
rate increase within deadlines.
