Trail blazing at Zona Wildlife Preserve: Members of the Porter County
Wildlife Management Advisory Board, County Park Superintendent Ed Melendez
and volunteers worked Sunday afternoon clearing two new trails in the Paul
C. Zona Sr. Wildlife Sanctuary in Jackson Township. The 92-acre heavily
wooded parcel was deeded to the county five years ago at the request of the
late Paul Zona, who wanted his land to be preserved as a wildlife refuge.
After wood chips are applied, the trails are expected to be open to the
public this spring. Shown taking a break from the trail work are (left to
right, in front) Dr. Larry McAfee, Dottie Kostka, Mary Ann Zona Gregg, and
Penny Callahan; (in back) Zeb Buechner, Frank Zona, Debra Zona, and Bob
Gregg. The sanctuary is managed jointly by the Porter County Parks
Department, County Commissioners, wildlife board, and the Zona family
members.
