Porter County Parks offers art workshops, outdoor family activities

The Porter County Parks and Recreation Department lists its activities and programs available to residents for their wellness and enjoyment throughout the next few weeks.

*  Family Hikes: Each month, the parks department invites families of Porter County to come out and enjoy Sunset Hill Farm with the park naturalist. Hikes this month will be on Saturday, May 3 and Friday, May 9 from 11 to 12 p.m. A new month will always bring a new topic for exploring and discussing from geology to history and beyond. This is a free program.

*  Acrylic Painting: All skill levels are welcome to attend this art class at the South Haven Public Library on Monday, May 5, under the guidance of an experienced instructor. A painting surface will be provided. Cost for the class is $10.

*  Duneland Photography Club: On Tuesday, May 6 from 7-9 p.m., club members meet monthly to discuss topics related to photography. Topics range from camera basics to post processing of pictures. There are no costs to join. For more information email Dunelandphotoclub@gmail.com

*  Meet the Animals: Families are invited to stop by Sunset Hill Farm on Friday, May 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. and meet the animals and their caretakers. This is a free program.

*  Flower Photography Workshop: Join members of the Duneland Photography club at Brincka-Cross Gardens to learn the ins and outs of photographing wild flowers on Saturday, May 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be a short classroom session before venturing outdoors to photograph the beautiful flora and fauna at Brincka Cross. Must be 18, unless accompanied by an adult. This is a free program.

*  Young Artists at Sunset Hill Farm: On Saturday, May 3, from 1 to 2 p.m. All skill levels are welcome to take part in Youth painting instruction where the focus of the project is different each month. Participants will create and take home their project the same day. Cost is $8. For more information or to register call 219-734-0203 or email bkreiger@porterco.org.

*  Gentle Yoga and Strength Training for Seniors: Sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital Senior Circle: Every Thursday at the Hebron Public Library from 10:30 -11:30 a.m. until June 27 this Gentle Yoga and Strength Training class, Taught by a Yoga Fit Certified Instructor, will teach the basics of gentle yoga while sitting in a chair. The Parks Department will also incorporate the use of TheraBands for gentle strength training. Cost is $5 for each session or $30 for the entire series.

*  Boot Camp at Sunset-Sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital: Join a master level trainer at Sunset Hill for an invigorating hour long workout that is guaranteed to work your body from head to toe. Sessions will be on Saturdays from 7-8 a.m. from now to June 14. Open to men and women 18 years and older. Cost is $5 per session or $35 for the series.

*  Mind, Body, Wellness Open House: Join instructors for an afternoon at Brincka Cross Gardens on Saturday, May 3 from 12-4 p.m. and experience the programs that are offered there. There will be mini blocks of Reiki, gentle yoga, mandala, meditative walks and much more. This is a free program.

*  Womenís Walk Club at Sunset Hill Farm County Park-Sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park, every Tuesday and Thursday from 8-9 a.m. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Sunset Dog Walkers at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Bring your four-legged friend on a leash for a walk on the trails at Sunset Hill Farm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. The walk will offer wellness information and encouragement for the dogs and their walkers. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Weekday Walk at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park. The program is every Wednesday from now until Oct. 29. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Open to men and women 18 years or older. This is a free program.
