Dunes Action, the local group organized to stop the proposed private banquet center on the public Indiana Dunes State Park beach, has announced that more than 500 Northwest Indiana citizens and business owners have sought a “NO Banquet Center” yard sign so far.

“We just keep placing new orders for signs,” said Dunes Action sign committee co-chair Pam Rearick.

The bright blue and white signs have popped up in Duneland, in Chesterton, Porter, Burns Harbor, Beverly Shores, and Westville, along with unincorporated Porter County, Valparaiso, Portage, Hobart, Dyer, Miller Beach, Munster, Merrillville, Hammond, and Union Mills, the group said.

“We’ve had a tremendous response,” said Dunes Action co-organizer Desi Robertson, “People want to share the message.”

A number of Duneland businesses have volunteered to help distribute the signs.

Yard signs are available in Chesterton at The Duneland Resale, 800 W. Broadway, Red Cup Cafe, 115 Broadway, and L.O.A.F. (Local, Organic, Affordable Food), 401 N. Calumet.

A $10 donation is suggested, to cover the cost of the sign and to support the ongoing efforts of Dunes Action.

Dunes ACTION! is a volunteer, non-partisan coalition that is opposed to the plan by the IDNR to allow a private development company to build and operate a conference/banquet center on the lakefront at the Indiana Dunes State Park.

The group is at www.dunesaction.org and on Facebook at Dunes Action.
