New trails open at Brincka Cross Gardens: A ribbon cutting was held Tuesday afternoon at Brincka-Cross Gardens, celebrating seven years of effort to develop 1.6 miles of new walking trails. Pictured at front left to right, at front, are long-time volunteer Olga Petryszyn, Porter County Parks Superintendent Walter Lenckos, former park board member Richard Maxey, and current park board members Tom Schnabel and David Canright. Also on hand were volunteers, staff, and representatives of the DNR and Duneland Chamber, which co-sponsored the event. The trails are now open to the public, leading hikers through a gently sloping woods, with an abundance of seasonal wildflowers. Walkers and joggers are advised that the trails are open, but there remain small -- sometimes muddy -- gaps where boardwalks and bridges are planned when a permit delay is resolved.
