Memorial bench planned to honor Charlotte and Herb Read

Back To Front Page

To honor the memory of Herb and Charlotte Read for their lifelong commitment to protecting the Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan, Dunes Action is currently raising funds and collecting plastic bottle caps to be turned into a memorial bench and plaque at Porter Beach.

Porter Parks Department collects the caps to be recycled into benches. The Read bench will be located at Porter Beach for public use. Any plastic caps from milk, soda, detergent, medicine bottles, etc., can be taken to the Porter Parks Department Office, located in Hawthorne Park.

Each bench requires about 400 lbs. of plastic caps, which would have been added to the trash if not recycled. Please mark the bags with “For Read Bench.” Dunes Action believes the Read’s would approve of this lesson in reuse and recycling.

Anyone interested in donating cash for the bench and plaque may send a check to: Dunes Action, P.O. Box 2031, Chesterton, IN 46304.

Any funds raised in excess of the cost of the bench will be used by Dunes Action for their fight against the proposed banquet hall on the Dunes State Park beach.

Questions can be directed to Diane Bates at 219-926-7733.
