April showers bring May flowers.

May showers, on the other hand--as Dunelanders learned last month--bring mud, damp, backyard pooling, burned-out sump pumps, frayed tempers, and soggy souls.

According to records generously provided by Bill Williams, chief operator at the Chesterton wastewater treatment plant, in May it rained fully 24 days out of 31, including 10 consecutive days May 21-30.

Add for good measure the last four days of April and it rained 27 days out of 35.

Total rainfall in May: 8.12 inches, comparable to the all-time May record of 8.25 inches recorded last month in Chicago. The Chesterton Tribune was unable immediately to find the Duneland record.

Include the last four days in April, and between April 27 and May 31 Duneland was deluged by nearly a foot of rain: 11.37 inches. On five separate occasions during that period daily rainfall totals exceeded one inch.

Chestertonís average rainfall in May, the Weather Channel reports: 3.85 inches.
