Shifting Sands: On
the Path to Sustainability, the documentary produced locally by
long-time Indiana Dunes environmentalist Lee Botts, will be released on 82
public television stations nationwide on Sunday, Aug. 14.
The documentary
shows how the influential environmental battles fought over the Dunes offer
a blueprint for a more sustainable future and showcases the region as a
catalyst of American conservation, industrialization, and environmental
policy.
“We are excited and
gratified that ‘Shifting Sands’ is getting so much attention across the
country,” Botts said. “The story of conserving the Indiana Dunes captures
the importance of ecology, the environment, and of consensus building among
opposing stakeholders. It’s a story relatable to many pockets of the
country.”
The 82 stations
airing Shifting Sands: On the Path to Sustainability include public
television stations in Boston, Dallas, New Orleans, and Los Angeles.
The August
nationwide debut of Shifting Sands: On the Path to Sustainability
marks 100 years since the National Park Service (NPS) first proposed a
national park in an urban settingÑa proposal to safeguard one of America’s
most studied landscapes. The film also honors the 100th anniversary NPS and
the 50th anniversary of the congressional authorization of Indiana Dunes
National Lakeshore.
