The Friends of the Indiana Dunes group was recently recognized by the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) for their long history of support for the Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore.

Life-long activist Charlotte Read presented the Izaak Walton League’s 2018 Honor Roll award to the Friends of the Dunes Board of Directors on Saturday, January 26, at their quarterly board meeting at the Indiana Dunes Visitors Center, Chesterton.

The national award is presented annually to organizations and individuals that are not League members but have made outstanding accomplishments involving conservation, public education, or publicity efforts in keeping with the goals of the League. Porter County Chapter member and cofounder Charlotte Read recommended the Friends for their years of work in promoting the Indiana Dunes State Park and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. “They have been promoting the parks for years and done so much to educate the public about the parks and their natural and cultural histories,” she said, “They have done wonderful work.”

The Friends of the Dunes sponsor various events during the year to benefit the parks and the organizations that help them to support fundraising, education programs, and volunteer work.

The Porter County Izaak Walton League was created in 1958 to promote conservation and work to create the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
