Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore open for business

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the entire National Park Service (NPS) are back open, with this month’s federal government shutdown at an end, for now.

Fall colors should reach their peak in the next two weeks, NPS said, making it a great time to take a leisurely stroll along any of the National Lakeshore’s 45 miles of trail or a bike ride along the recently opened Porter Brickyard Bike Trail.

Stop by the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to talk with an NPS ranger and plan out your visit to the Dunes.

NPS said in a statement released today that it appreciates the public’s patience during the park’s closure and in particular thanked the following partners for their assistance during the shutdown: Porter County Tourism, Dunes National Park Association, Indiana Landmarks, Town of Beverly Shores, City of Gary, the Dunes Learning Center, City of Portage, and Indiana Dunes State Park.
