The Indiana
Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has extended the comment
period deadline for U.S. Steel Corporation’s closure plan for its Hazardous
Waste Disposal Unit No. 5 (HWD-5) to July 25.
IDEM is
reviewing the closure plan submitted by U.S. Steel in compliance with state
and federal hazardous waste regulations for clsoure of HWD-5 on the west
side of U.S. Steel at Gary Works at 1 N. Broadway.
Public comments
about the closure plan must be submitted to IDEM via mail by Saturday, July
25.
If the public
wishes to hand-deliver comments, they must be submitted by 5 p.m. Eastern on
Friday, July 24.

IDEM will
consider all public comments before issuing a final decision concerning the
closure plan for HWD-5.
IDEM will be
holding a public comment period in the future concerning the closure of
neutralized acid waste lagoons, which is a separate hazardous waste
management unit identified as HWT-2. U.S. Steel is expected to submit a
revised closure plan for HWT-2, at which time IDEM will make it available
for review and comment.
