High bacteria levels at two Dunes beaches

Back To Front Page

Contamination advisories have been issued for Indiana Dunes State Park West Beach and for Broadway Beach in Beverly Shores.

Sampling at IDSP West Beach on Wednesday indicated high bacteria levels from an unknown source. Sampling at Broadway Beach on Thursday indicated the same.

The contamination advisories are unrelated to Thursday’s fish-kill event in the East Branch of the Little Calumet River, believed to have been caused by a chemical exceedance at ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor. High bacteria levels at Indiana Dunes beaches are often associated with prevailing northerly winds, as have been blowing late this week.

Water sampling is conducted at both beaches on a daily basis during the swimming season.
