Central Ave. Beach in Beverly Shores--part of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore--has been temporarily closed due to the flooding of an access road, the National Park Service announced today.

NPS was unable to say how long that access road--Beverly Drive between Montana Ave. and U.S. Highway 12--will remain closed. “The cause of the flooding is being investigated,” NPS noted.

The road closure has forced NPS to move an orienteering program, scheduled to be held at Central Ave. Beach at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 9, to a new location. The orienteering program will now be held, at the same time on Sunday, at the National Lakeshore’s Miller Woods site. Meet in the parking lot of the Douglas Center at 100 N. Lake St. in the Miller section of Gary.

For more information, call (219) -395-1882 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

“Despite this temporary closure of Central Ave. Beach, over 13 miles of beach remain open to the public,” NPS said. “National Lakeshore beaches that remain open include West Beach, Porter, Kemil, Dunbar and Lakeview. In addition, the neighboring Indiana Dunes State Park remains open.
