Dunes State Park technician Mike Bucheit wins top state honor

Mike Bucheit, a maintenance and repair technician at Indiana Dunes State Park and an employee of the DNR Division of State Parks & Reservoirs, is the recipient of the Col. Richard Lieber Award, the agency’s top civilian employee honor.

Bucheit was presented with the award at a ceremony last week.

Bucheit was recognized for his problem solving and craftsmanship, especially in diagnosing a recent problem with the park’s wastewater treatment facility and for his role in building a bird observation tower which DNR director Cameron Clark has called a “masterpiece.”

Other honorees: Conservation Officer Lance Labonte won the Pitzer Award for 2013 as Outstanding Officer of the Year. Other district officers of the year: Jon Cook (1), Justin Blake (2), David Schwanke (3), Billy Doss (4), Michael Gregg (5), Robert Doane (7), Dennis Talley (8), Zachary Walker (9) and Patrick Malia (10).

Other law enforcement award recipients: Jacob Carlile (Boating Enforcement Officer of the Year); Wilson Davis (Indiana Bowhunters Association Phil Ohmit Officer of the Year); Justin Blake (Waterfowl Enforcement Officer of the Year); Michael Gregg (Lifesaving Award); Janet Kuntz, District 9 (Civilian Employee of the Year); and Lt. William Browne (Director’s Leadership Award).

Bureau employee of the year awards were presented to Mark Basch of the Division of Water (Bureau of Resource Management); Gary Christopher of the Division of State Parks & Reservoirs (Bureau of Land Management); and Brandy Lewis (Bureau of Administrative Management).

Dan Jessup of the Division of Fish & Wildlife received the IDEA (Innovation, Distinction and Efficiency Award).
