Indiana Dunes State
Park has prohibited swimming and wading in the waters of Lake Michigan until
Saturday, Sept. 5, citing a shortage of lifeguards.
Dunes State Park
announced the ban on its Facebook page on Friday, noting that the beach
itself remains open for sunbathing and walking during regular park hours.
“The main and west
parking lots are open, and campers can continue to access the beach for
walking and sunbathing from the Beach Trail boardwalk,” Dunes State Park
said. “As is standard practice on busy days during the summer, when the lots
are full, cars will be admitted for beach access only when other cars leave.
This approach reduces congestion on the beach and allows for more social
distancing.”
“Please explore and
enjoy the Nature Center, hiking trails, and the rest of the park during your
stay,” Dunes State Park added. “Thank you for your patience.”
