Dunes National Lakeshore to expand a bit

Back to Front Page

The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore could soon grow by another 10 acres.

The National Lakeshore is currently accepting public feedback on a plan to incorporate two additional parcels of land adjacent to park boundaries.

The first parcel is a donation from the Save the Dunes Conservation Fund of about six acres in Lake County, lying south of the CSX railroad and north and east of Hobart Road in Gary. The parcel was acquired by the Save the Dunes Conservation Fund specifically for a donation to the National Park Service.

The property contains wetlands and savanna habitat.

The other parcel, in the Ind. 49 corridor, consists of about four acres of an original eight-acre parcel that was added to the National Lakeshore’s boundary in 1992. It lies east and south of the current National Lakeshore boundary north of Hjelm Road and west of Main Street (50E). Also to be added are platted but unbuilt roads and alleys that abut the lots involved.

The NPS notifies the public of minor boundary adjustments prior to the revisions becoming final. For more information on the revision or to view maps showing the land to be added, contact Fed Szarka, management assistant, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, 1100 North Mineral Springs Road, Porter, or by phone at 926-7561, ext. 414.
