A locally organized citizen group, “Dunes Action!” has formed to oppose the proposed conference / banquet center addition at the Indiana Dunes State Park beach.

The group has launched a petition campaign to show Indiana officials the scope of opposition to the plan. The group’s Change.org petition has garnered 1,200 signatures, a number which continues to grow since its launch last week, the group said in a press release today.

The address for the petition is: www.change.org/p/indiana-governor-pence-cancel-plans-to-build-a-massive-new-banquet-conference-center-structure-at-the-indiana-dunes-state-park.

Dunes Action! urges anyone who would like to express opposition to the plan, or get questions answered, to attend the Department of Natural Resources question and answer meeting set for Wednesday, April 15, at the Chesterton Middle School.

The group encourages those opposed to the new construction to wear green.

The meeting will be from 6-8 p.m., at Chesterton Middle School, 651 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton. Doors to the auditorium will open at 5:45 p.m.

The format will include a brief presentation from the DNR, followed by an opportunity for attendees to ask questions or make comments before the full audience. Those wishing to speak must sign up at the start of the meeting, and will be limited to two minutes.
