Police confirm alligator in LaPorte lake

LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) -- It may not be as big as the monster alligator in “Lake Placid,” but police say an alligator in a northern Indiana lake scared fishermen.

LaPorte police this week confirmed what fishermen earlier this month had reported: There’s an alligator swimming in Pine Lake.

LaPorte police officer Matthew Drangmeister, who saw the reptile Wednesday, said it was about 4 feet long.

Drangmeister and another officer sighted the animal a day after police assisted two fishermen who refused to leave a floating platform about 20 feet from shore when they saw the alligator. A passing motorist heard the men screaming Tuesday night and called police. Officers came and turned flashlights on the water so the men could wade safely to shore.

Authorities believe the alligator is an escaped pet.
