U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-1st, is announcing that he will seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Visclosky released the following statement after deadline Wednesday:

“Today, I am excited to announce I have filed to seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

“I understand the tremendous responsibility entrusted to our public servants and I consider it a great privilege to represent the interests of Northwest Indiana in our nation's capital.

“I will continue to fight hard on behalf of all residents of Northwest Indiana and work to build a more prosperous and successful regional economy.

“We have made great progress to support and defend American steelworkers, but now is not the time to be complacent. Now is the time to act with all urgency to fight back against unfair trading practices and to encourage new technology and manufacturing industries in our region.

“We have also fostered investments in our economic and transportation infrastructure, but now is not the time to be complacent. Now is the time to use every day to maximize the value of these investments to retain and attract new people and economic activity to our region.

“I remain dedicated to fighting for every resident of Northwest Indiana in our nation’s capital as the Representative of the First Congressional District of Indiana and as the Ranking Member of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee to continue to work to keep our nation safe and secure.

“I look forward to the 2018 election.”

Visclosky was first elected to the U.S. House in 1984 and is currently serving his 17th term.
