Ton Trout precinct vote totals corrected

The Chesterton Tribune incorrectly reported certain precinct vote totals in its coverage on Tuesday of the Ton/Trout primary race.

As reported, the vote totals for Westchester 1, 3, 4, and 12 show Jim Tonís margin of victory in those four precincts to be much smaller than it was.

In fact, Ton outpolled Jeff Trout by a total of 181 votes to 75--better than a two-to-one margin--in Westchester 1, 3, 4, and 12. Those four precincts--Tonís reservoir of support--include Chestertonís oldest neighborhoods, those very roughly bounded by Broadway to the north, Ind. 49 to the east, 1100N to the south, and 23rd Street to the west.

Trout, on the other hand, was much more competitive in the other eight precincts, running neck-and-neck with Ton in several, winning others outright, and outpolling Ton in all them by a total of 162 votes to 142. In three of those eight, he outpolled Ton by not quite a three-to-two margin, 102 votes to 73: Liberty 1 and 5 (Westwood Manor and Abercrombie Woods); and Westchester 14 (Olde Towne, Duneland Cove, the Villages of Sand Creek, and the Estates of Sand Creek).

Itís probably worth noting that, between Tonís four-precinct base in the historical center of town and Troutís eight-precinct base on its expanding margins, there was also a small but not insignificant differential in Tuesdayís turnout rate:

* Total registered voters in W1, 3, 4, and 12: 4,274. Of those, 384 or 8.98 percent went to the polls.

* Total registered voters in Jackson 4, L1 and L5, and W 8, 9, 10, 14, and 18: 5,447. Of those, 398 or 7.31 percent went to the polls.

For the record, an 8.98-percent turnout rate in the latter eight precincts would have resulted in an additional 91 ballots (a few of which would have been Democrat). Tonís overall margin of victory: 86 votes.

The Tribune regrets the mistake.
