United Steelworkers (USW) leaders and members from across Northwest Indiana held a roundtable Wednesday morning at USW Local 12775 to promote U.S. Joe Donnelly, D-Indiana, as being the best advocate for steelworkers and working Hoosiers in the Senate.

The event was part of the “Labor for Joe” constituency group, which launched on Saturday at IBEW Local 481 in Indianapolis.

This morning’s roundtable was moderated by Jerome Davison of USW District 7 and included such local USW leaders as Vern Beck, president of Local 12775; and Sondra Espinoza, vice-president of Local 13796. The theme of the discussion, according to a statement released by the USW: Donnelly’s “work to support steelworkers and other working Hoosiers, including his efforts to keep American jobs in the country. Joe’s End Outsourcing Act would encourage businesses to keep jobs in America by penalizing companies seeking government contracts who have shipped jobs to other countries and offering tax incentives to those who bring jobs back to our nation. The participants also focused on strengthening workers’ rights and finding solutions to bring more working families into the labor movement.”

“Joe Donnelly has been there for steelworkers in Indiana and across the U.S., so I’m proud to be there for him today,” Beck said. “Whether it’s protecting Indiana steel from trade deals that rig the system, cracking down on Chinese currency manipulation to fight unfair competition, or making sure Hoosier steelworkers have the skills they need in the 21st Century, Joe has always put Hoosier workers first. We’ll fight every day until November to keep him in the Senate.”
