State Rep. Mara Candelaria-Reardon, D-Munster, to run for Visclosky's seat

State Rep. and Democrat Caucus Chair Mara Candelaria-Reardon, D-Munster--the first Latina elected to the Indiana House--is announcing her candidacy for the 1st District Congressional seat.

I am going to continue my hard work to protect healthcare, create the jobs that our communities deserve and fight back against the dangerous policies of the Trump Administration, Candelaria-Reardon said. Ive never been afraid to speak the truth to power in Indiana and now Im ready to take that fight to DC.

Born in East Chicago, Candelaria-Reardon comes from a family of public servants and labor leaders which instilled in her a strong commitment to union labor. Her introduction to public service began while working for U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-1st, as a federal projects coordinator.

During her tenure in the Indiana House, Candelaria-Reardon focused on infrastructure and the safety and security of the 12th District, including the $14 million dollars needed to complete the Little Calumet River levy system. In addition, Candelaria-Reardon has been a champion for public education and raising teacher pay.

Having served on nearly a dozen House committees Candelaria-Reardon was elected to a leadership position as Chair of the House Democrat Caucus, a historic caucus that is for the first time, made up of a majority of women. Candelaria-Reardon has ascended to national leadership, serving as chair of both the Board of Hispanic Caucus Chairs, the National Association of Elected and Appointed Officials, and the Education Fund Board of Directors.

Candelaria-Reardon has been married to her husband, Matt, for 22 years and they reside in Munster with their college age children. She is a partner at MCR Partners LLC., a consulting firm specializing in development, government affairs, and economic development finance.
