Incumbent District 4 State Representative Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso) now has a challenger in the primary: Republican Sara Blohm.

Republican Christopher A. Buckley has filed for Judge of the Porter Superior Court No.4.

Democrats Carrie Castro and Andrew Sylwestrowicz are the latest to throw a hat in the ring to replace retiring First District U.S. Representative Pete Visclosky in Congress.

Such are the highlights from the 2020 candidate filings as of deadline today.

So far, the only contested County-wide race on the primary ballot is for North District Commissioner, where Republicans will have a choice between incumbent Jim Biggs and challenger (and County Council member) Jeff Larson.

Republicans will also have a choice between Katrina Spence Smock and Mike Fish for Judge of the Porter Superior Court No.1 in the primary.

Since only three candidates of either major party have filed for three at-large seats on the County Council, those six candidates are the presumptive general election candidates, though there is still time for Independent and Minor Party candidates to gather petition signatures or for Libertarians to be nominated by their respective Town conventions.

Democrats County Treasurer Michelle Clancy and County Surveyor Kevin Breitzke remain unopposed. No one has filed yet for Ogden Dunes Town Council wards 2, 3, and 4. Candidates in Ogden Dunes usually run as Independents, and Minor Party or Independent candidates have until June 30 to file.

File by Feb. 7

Republican and Democratic candidates have until noon local time tomorrow--Friday, Feb. 7 to file to run for office. Minor party, independent, and Libertarian candidates are not subject to the Feb. 7 deadline because they don’t appear on the primary ballot.

Generally, candidates must be registered voters residing in the district they seek to represent. Candidates for state representative must be at least 21 years old. Indiana law prohibits anyone who has been convicted of or pleaded no contest to a felony from running for elected office.

Major party candidates for local office are required to file with the Porter County Elections & Registration Office in suite 105 of the Porter County Administration Building, 155 Indiana Avenue, Valparaiso. Those filing for State, Federal, legislative, or judicial offices must file with the Indiana Election Division in Indianapolis.
