Porter County Council President Andy Bozak easily fended off a challenge on Tuesday from Chesterton Town Council Member Emerson DeLaney, to win the Republican nomination to the 1st District seat.

Bozak took 1,415 votes or 61 percent, to DeLaney’s 909 votes or 39 percent.

Bozak was originally elected to the 1st District County Council seatÑrepresenting North Porter County, including DunelandÑby a Republican caucus in January 2017, to fill the vacancy created when incumbent Jim Biggs was elected to the Porter County Commissioners.

Bozak, a director of operations who resides in Burns Harbor, will face Democrat Bob Poparad in the general election on Nov. 6. Poparad previously served on the County Council as an at-large member.

The 1st District race was the only contested County Council primary on the ballot on Tuesday. The other County Council races in November:

* 2nd District: Democrat incumbent Jeremy Rivas; no Republican has filed.

* 3rd District: Republican Mark “Coach” Hoffman; Democrat Greg Simms.

* 4th District: Republican incumbent Mike Jessen; no Democrat has filed.
