Porter County Bar members rate judicial candidates

The Porter County Bar Association has released the results of its 2020 election survey.

The Bar Association does not endorse judicial candidates but did ask its 172 voluntary members to rate the six candidates in three races in a number of categories.

The races:

-- Porter Circuit Court: Judge Mary DeBoer (R) versus Mitch Peters (D).

-- Porter Superior Court 1: Michael Fish (R) versus Matt Soliday (D).

-- Porter Superior Court 4: Judge David Chidester (D) versus Christopher Buckley (R).

In each category, candidates were rated on a scale of five points, with one the lowest score and five the highest. The results by category:

Ability to Reason

-- Circuit Court: DeBoer 3.98; Peters; 3.9.

-- Superior 1: Fish 3.4; Soliday 4.2.

-- Superior 4: Chidester 3.3; Buckley 2.9.

Timeliness/Organization in Processing Matters

-- Circuit Court: DeBoer 4.1; Peters 3.96

-- Superior 1: Fish 3.4; Soliday 4.2.

-- Superior 4: Chidester 3.6; Buckley 2.97.

Knowledge of Civil Law

-- Circuit Court: DeBoer 3.7; Peters 3.9.

-- Superior 1: Fish 3.4; Soliday 3.98.

-- Superior 4: Chidester 3.5; Buckley 3.0.

Knowledge of Criminal Law

-- Circuit Court: DeBoer 3.6; Peters 4.4.

-- Superior 1: Fish 3.0; Soliday 4.5

-- Superior 4: Chidestern 3.8; Buckley 3.0.

Ethics

-- Circuit Court: DeBoer 4.1; Peters 4.1.

-- Superior 1: Fish 4.1; Soliday 4.5

-- Superor 4: Chidester 3.4; Buckley 3.0.

Character and Fitness for the Practice of Law

-- Circuit Court: DeBoer 4.3; Peters 4.3.

-- Superior 1: Fish 4.1; Soliday 4.5.

-- Superior 4: Chidester 3.5 Buckley 3.2.

Temperament

-- Circuit Court: DeBoer 3.9; Peters 4.1.

-- Superior 1: Fish 3.7; Soliday 4.3.

-- Superior 4: Chidester 2.95; Buckley 3.1.

The Bar Association retained Votenet Solutions to administer the survey, manage the submissions, and calculate the official results.

The Porter County Bar Association Election Survey was conducted Oct. 8-29 through a secure voting site at eballot4.votenet.com/pcba

“After completing our audit process, Votenet Solutions Inc. hereby certifies that during the course of the event that eBallot was performing optimally, experienced no downtime, and never experienced a security lapse,” Votenet Operations Manager Steven Castellano said. “After checking our multiple results databases for tampering by technicians, Votenet Solutions Inc. further certifies that the results in both databases match and the online vote was conducted fairly and honestly. It is our opinion that online submissions for your event were tabulated in a fair and impartial way and are deemed accurate.”

Of the Bar Association’s 172 members, 92 actually voted or 53 percent; 25 or 15 percent viewed the survey but did not vote; and 55 or 32 percent did not participate at all.
