Portage Council member running for Commissioner; deadline next week

Back To Front Page

There’s one week left to go in what has turned out to be a slow year for candidate filings in local races for the May Democrat and Republican primary elections, but things could be picking up as Porter County saw a new name added to the ticket for North District County Commissioner.

On Thursday, Republican John M. Cannon entered the race for the North Commissioner seat, currently held by John Evans.

Cannon is on the Portage City Council, just starting his second term, and has a background in management.

The Commissioner race has seen one other filing so far, Democrat Jeffrey Chidester. Evans has not yet filed for re-election for what would be his fifth term in office.

In the South County Commissioner race, the only filing has been the incumbent, Democrat Laura Shurr Blaney.

Filing ends at noon next Friday, Feb. 5.

The other offices candidates can file for on the County level are County Council at-large, Superior Court 3 Judge, County Treasurer and County Surveyor.

Contested races

Also this week, some races have become contested on ballots that Duneland voters will see in May. Democrat Jesse Harper filed for 4th District State Representative and will face Pam Mishler Fish for the seat. On the Republican side, incumbent Ed Soliday remains unopposed.

And, Democrat Michael L. Deppe will challenge incumbent Julia Jent for Porter County Superior Court 3 Judge.

The U.S. Senator race is contested now for the Republicans with two more candidates filing -- Eric Holcomb and Marlin Stuzman. They will vie for the seat with Todd Young.

Also, GOP voters in Indiana will have at least two options for President. The race currently includes candidates Jeb Bush and John R. Kasich.

Pelath files

In other news, State Rep. for 9th District Scott Pelath filed for re-election on the Democrat ticket.
