Current Porter County candidates for elected office--or those considering running for office--are urged to attend a candidate information session, from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Commissioners’ Chambers at the Porter County Admin Building, 155 Indiana Ave. in Valparaiso.

On July 1, new legislation combined the Porter County Voter Registration and Porter County Elections offices and put them under the responsibility of the Porter County Clerk. “Porter County has been given a clean slate with the creation of this new office, and we have many goals,” Porter County Clerk Jessica Bailey said. “One of the goals is candidate education.”

The Porter County Elections & Registration office, under the new direction of Director Sundae Schoon and Assistant Director Becky Rausch, will host its first candidate information session on Oct. 5. This session will focus on accurately completing campaign finance reports as well as information regarding common signage concerns.

“As with the other projects in the Elections & Registration office we wanted a bipartisan, collaborative approach,” Bailey said. “To accomplish this task we reached out to party leaders for assistance in finding facilitators and heard the same names multiple times. We are very excited that Kenard Taylor and Sarah Ferraro have both agreed to facilitate this session. Both of these individuals have been involved in the political scene for years and have valuable information to share with the community, candidates, and potential candidates.”

Sarah Ferraro, co-founder and board chair of RiseNWI, was the statewide field director for the Ritz 4 Education and John Gregg for Governor campaigns, where she managed and mentored 15 regional field directors working across Indiana to implement targeted direct voter contact and recruit volunteers.

Kenard Taylor began working in elections in 1976, when he served on a congressional campaign. Since then, he has been involved in over 100 campaigns from worker to campaign manager. In 1998, he became involved in campaign finance and reporting of campaign income and expenses. Since that time, his involvement has increased to the point where he currently serves as campaign treasurer for 12 different committees and advisor to many more.
