WDSO radio students honored at ceremony

Chesterton High School radio station WDSO-FM held its 35th annual WDSO Awards Night on Tuesday evening, May 9, in the CHS Cafeteria.

Guests for the evening were Chris Acton, publicist for the Chesterton Art Center and host of Artful Conversations; and CHS Principal Jeff Van Drie.

Nominations for awards were made by the membership of WDSO except for special awards. Receiving plaques for these outstanding awards were Miles Jablonski (11), Most Outstanding Newscaster and Eli Ontiveros (11), Most Outstanding DJ.

Senior Awards: Senior Awards were presented in plaque form to all on-air DJ’s. Seniors Justin Brinkley, Zachary Caprous, Josiah Fentress, Nick Lau and Joshua Watkin. Graduating Member of WDSO Awards were presented to Seniors Madi Peretin, Alex Kapote and Krishna Kapote.

Additional certificate awards to students in all grade levels: Most Outstanding New Student, Matthew Koutsapaganos (10); Outstanding Morning Assistant, Seniors Alex Kapote and Marie O’Neill; Sophomores Zoe Kierstead, Matthew Koutsopanagos and Devin Michael (10); Freshmen Olivia Lee, Avianna Rossetti, Eve Senderhauf and Andrew Skalku. Most Knowledgeable Veteran Student, Miles Jablonski (11); Most Improved Veteran Student, Nick Lau; Most Dedicated Radio 2 Student, Joshua Watkin (12); Best Promo Makers, Seniors Zachary Caprous, Josiah Fentress, Nick Lau and Joshua Watkin.

Academic Letter: An Academic Letter went to senior Josiah Fentress. To earn this award the student must be on-air qualified for at least 12 calendar months, complete all requirements for veteran status and attend at least 80 percent of WDSO monthly meetings. Management reviews the student’s conduct. A grade of “A” or “B” in at least three semesters of Radio 2/Independent study, plus participation in 10 special events like engineering or announcing sports, election results or special news broadcasts are required.

News Awards: Most Promising New Newscaster, Devin Michael; Most Improved Newscaster, James Hennings (10).

Sports Awards: Best On-Air Sportscaster, Justin Brinkley (12); Most Promising New Sportscaster, Kody Wilkerson (10). Sportscaster Awards went to Seniors Justin Brinkley and Owen Hallas; Juniors Donovan Lawnicki and Simon Williger; Sophomores Evelyn Pabon and Kody Wilkerson and Freshmen Nicholas Sierra and Max Winski.

Music Awards: Best Afterschool Show, Donovan Lawnicki; Most Promising New DJ, James Hennings; Most Improved DJ, Nick Lau.

Afterschool Music Show Awards went to: seniors, Joshua Watkin and Justin Brinkley; juniors, Miles Jablonski, Donovan Lawnicki and Eli Ontiveros and sophomore, Sami Bunning.

Checklist Completion Award: Receiving the Checklist Completion Award was Senior Josiah Fentress.

WDSO Service Awards: Four years: Senior Josiah Fentress. Three years: Senior Nick Lau; Juniors Miles Jablonski, Andrew Stolz and Simon Williger. Two years: Seniors Owen Hallas, Madi Peretin, Zachary Caprous and Joshua Watkin; Juniors Donovan Lawnicki, Eli Ontiveros and Jacob Waters; Sophomores Sami Bunning and James Hennings. One year: Seniors Alex Kapote, Krishna Kapote and Marie O’Neill; Sophomores Jacob Bliss, Chris Ellis, Matthew Koutsopanagos, Devin Michael, Logan Miller and Evelyn Pabon;Freshmen Max Cohen, Olivia Lee, Avianna Rossetti, Eve Senderhauf, Nicholas Sierra and Andrew Skalku.

Staff awards: members each received a certificate for serving as director in the various departments. Co-Assistant Program directors Josiah Fentress (12) and Miles Jablonski (11); News Director Sami Bunning (10); Music Director, Eli Ontiveros (11); Co-Sports Directors Simon Williger (11) and Donovan Lawnicki (11); PSA Director Andrew Stolz.

Staff Department Awards: Staff Department Awards went to Andrew Stolz for Most Improved Department-PSA; Eli Ontiveros (11), director for Best Department-Music and for Most Dedicated Staff Member.

Appreciation Awards were presented to members of the school or community who have hosted special programs for WDSO, including Jeff Van Drie, CHS principal; Rob Blumenthal, Josh Huwig, Judy Malasto and Brent Martinson, CHS assistant principals, hosts of the CHS Weekly Report; Naturalists/ Interns at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, hosts of Naturally Speaking. Dr. Jenny Herbert (Owner/Veterinarian) of Arbor View Animal Hospital and her staff - Dr. Johanna Nimeth and Dr. Jessica Byerly, veterinarians; Bobbie Kaufman, office manager, hosts of the monthly show Pet Talk; Chesterton Tribune for providing Echoes of the Past for WDSO’s Daily Almanac Show; Serena (Sutliff) Ard, curator of the Westchester Township History Museum for hosting, Historically Speaking and Chris Acton, publicist for the Chesterton Art Center for hosting Artful Conversations.

New Staff for 2017-18

New staff for the 2017-18 school year include: program director, Eli Ontiveros; music director, Andrew Stolz, co-assistant music directors, Miles Jablonski and Simon Williger; news director, Samantha Bunning; PSA co-directors, James Hennings and Logan Miller; and promotions director, Devin Michael. Matthew Waters is the station manager/faculty advisor and Michele Stipanovich is the station’s operations manager.
